Korean -겠다: When It Means "Will" and When It Means "Probably"
Korean -겠- has two uses: announcing your own intention and inferring about someone else. Most learners only learn one.
For Korean learners at beginner to intermediate level
-겠다 is one of those grammar points where translation fails you completely.
In English, 가겠어요 is "I will go" and 배고프겠다 is "You must be hungry" — two different meanings, same -겠-. Understanding why makes both uses click at once.
The Two Jobs of -겠-
1. Intention — the speaker is deciding or committing to something
오늘은 일찍 자겠어요. — I am going to sleep early tonight. 열심히 하겠습니다. — I will do my best.
This is a first-person use. You are announcing your own intention or decision.
2. Inference — the speaker is guessing based on evidence
많이 힘드셨겠어요. — That must have been really hard for you. 내일은 바쁘겠다. — Tomorrow is probably going to be busy.
This is often second or third person. You are drawing a conclusion from what you see or know.
The Pattern That Makes It Stick
Think of -겠- as meaning "from where I stand."
가겠어요 — From where I stand (my own will), I will go. 힘들겠다 — From where I stand (what I can see), it looks hard.
Same grammar, same mental posture. The difference is whether you are reporting your own intention or inferring about someone else.
Common Diary Mistakes
Learners often reach for -ㄹ 거예요 when -겠어요 is more natural for immediate intention.
| Situation | More natural | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Announcing a plan in the moment | 하겠어요 | Immediate, decisive |
| Talking about a fixed future plan | 할 거예요 | Already decided |
| Guessing at feelings | 힘드셨겠어요 | Inference from evidence |
✅ 오늘부터 매일 한국어 일기를 쓰겠어요. — Starting today, I will write a Korean diary. (a commitment, right now) ✅ 매일 한국어 일기를 쓸 거예요. — I am going to write a Korean diary every day. (a plan already in place)
